For local radio clubs, I do a PPT presentation on my squad radio collection.  When I put up the slide on the BC-611, folks are always dumbfounded by the fact that it's an 80M AM radio.  Invariably, someone ask, "How far can it reach?', thinking of the old "Combat" TV series where Sgt Saunders was able to talk with Lt. Hanley 10 or more miles away.  My answer to this range question is, "It can talk from the beachhead to the battle ships two miles off shore in the Channel."  Still, an amazing piece of technology and manufacturing genius.

The carbon mic tips are worthwhile to note and remember. The prob with Julyah's 611 set is low audio output. It's actually quite a simple circuit, electrically; how it is to actually work on, i don't know. I won't be up there until August, but i will pass on all recommendations.
She does have a ham radio license. I assured her contrary to some uninformed opinion, 300 mW or less, a one meter antenna and no ground, she need not be concerned about getting in anyone's hairdo with this radio.
