ATTACHED is the method recommended by Western Electric to rejuvenate carbon microphones.

Check the microphone element. Most of that older equipment had carbon composition microphones. The carbon sometimes becomes compacted. We used to take the microphone element and tap it a few time on the bench top and check it a few times to see if it was working any better.
