I usually do a quick check of crystal current when trying out new circuits or older military equipment. The modified holder has a 40 mA bulb and my personal cut off for current is around 20 mA or about half brilliance.  The older FT-243 and larger crystals seem to handle that much current without incident. However the newer imported crystals that are much smaller might be a problem.  Rot of Ruck!
