What is a ‘Budelman 128B’ receiver? I am familiar with a ( i think ) Mackay 128B, but that i think is a way different animal ? This is the one with “WCCO” painted near bottom of it.
I told my friend N9HXW who was the seller of
this radio that it had attracted some attention and after
receiving some photos of the chassis I did a bit more digging
and solved the mystery. The Budelman 128B was used to
receive signals from the Budelman model 127B wireless
microphone!
This explains why WCCO-AM, a 50KW MA radio
station, would have owned one. It seemed odd at first that it
would have variable tuning, but this was pretty early gear and
it's unclear that the transmitter was even crystal
controlled. The receiver's AFC feature was probably very
important!
