I'm quite fond of the ARR-15.  It is the foundation for all of the receivers Collins designed after WW2.  Both PTOs have similar stability to any of the other Collins PTOs.  The only real issue is that the PTO frequency is multiplied up on the higher bands so any PTO instability is also multiplied.

I never understood the need to modify the AM/CW switch and separate the switch functions.  From memory, all one needs to do to a stock unit is change the three IF coupling capacitors to about half of their present value, disconnect and tape up one wire to S103  and disconnect and tape up the wire to terminal 2 of Z122.

The capacitor change will narrow the IF bandpass from 12kc to perhaps 6kc.  Disconnecting one wire to S103 disables the CFI unit and disconnecting terminal 2 of Z122 keeps the audio bandpass in the wide audio (AM) mode.  Now when in the CW mode, SSB is available.

Jim

Here’s an email i sent Brian KN4R in a recent conversation:

No, i know nothing about the seller. But i have a story. The ARR-15 they have, for an imaginative $275, i saw about 4 years ago at Rickreall hamfest for $75.

These were a Tektronix employee project. They had the company metal shop make a new panel for a small bunch of guys. I still have this new front panel one

of those guys gave me. At the time, i thought, you would never find a cabinet for this mod radio, because it not only has the ARR-15’s depth, but the new panel expands the width too, so the original cabinet was junked. Recently i was thinking i maybe should have bought it. ( Maybe not ! ) I always wondered

what happened to them; there were 2 he was selling. There is not a person on the planet to pay 275 for this, so it will be interesting to watch what happens.

I “might” be the only person on the planet to consider buying one for say, $50. When you see some price like this for a modded receiver or some much hacked example at an imaginative Ebay price, you have to wonder about their awareness.

The Ebay item is

I see i was wrong about a couple points before i took today’s second look, but that’s alright, it still has zero chance of selling. It occurs to me now that

the seller may have acquired this as an estate buy or a storage unit seizure sale.
