Unless it is a very unusual output circuit …. most tube audio stages act as constant current sources (even if a transformer gets involved). Tacking on a low impedance load typically isn’t going to fry the transformer or output stage. 

If you have fancy feedback paths in the circuit to reduce distortion, things can get a bit crazy. That sort of thing in a radio like this would be pretty rare.

I have no doubt that transformers do fail. The manufacturing process for them is not quite as trivial as one might think.

The AFV headphones are something like 50 ohm but i would have to check. I have 3 of the Panzer crew phones that i need to sell off soon.
