We would like a DW but we can modify a DU as beggars can’t be choosers at this point. The tube will be about 4-5 feet long as the loop antenna is on the outside of the aircraft, on the centerline.

Thanks,

Subject: [Milsurplus] DU & DW Loop Antenna

The DU and DW are virtually identical except for the loop antenna mounting. The DU has it mounted directly on top of the tuning/control unit and was intended for installations where there was no metal fuselage surrounding it. The DW was intended for installations where the loop needed to be mounted on the outside of the fuselage (such as a PBY) and thus required a longer connecting tube between the control unit and antenna. The DW manual provides instructions for mounting the loop and support bearing on the outside of the aircraft and then cutting the tube to an appropriate length for connection to the control unit. The photo that was posted appears to show a DW as evidenced by the short tube, support bearing and cast aluminum handwheel used for rotation. I have both units and the manual for each although my DW is essentially a parts unit.

Happy tinkering!

Tom
