I like the 1 kHz dial readout with the variable IF. The Eddystone 830 series use a variable first IF to get the same accuracy but in that case,
there’s a second conversion to give selectivity. I think the “regenerative IF” thing is a pile of beans, as anyone who has ever used a Knight
or Hallicrafters receiver with that. Ditto following the variable IF on the ARC-2 with a Q5er. I am sort of thinking “a” method is to use a
2 terminal negative resistance stage connected right at the IF tuned circuit. ‘Amateur Radio Techniques’ by Pat Hawker many years ago
introduced that idea. BUT – you do have to find a space for a pot to control it – and that may be a problem – unless you maybe use an
outboard box.
