I too have to agree on that poor choice of a rather putrid looking grey. I recently salvaged the coils and pwr supply from one that was in bad cosmetic shape (could it get any worse looking) after being stored a few decades in a lawn shed. The coils will get a black crackle paint make over to be used with a Signal Corps HRO-7R . The supply I need for the WW2 Australian HRO AMR-100. I'll go back for the radio and pull the chassis out and any parts...other than the cabinet.

Gordon, I second your thoughts on the beauty of the black-wrinkle finish on the HRO-5TA1, especially when the metal skirts on the knobs are shined up. .

I always thought that National did a great dis-service to their HRO line
with the visual re-design of the HRO-7 . It just looks ugly. God, why
did National like that god awful battleship gray? They made up for it
with the HRO-50, especially the black HRO-50R version, one of the most
pretty HRO's every made. I am also partial to the black wrinkle HRO-5TA1
of which I have a nearly pristine version.  YMMV
