I like the older black crackle HROs..as well as the post war HROs that are black crackle.  I like my HRO 7C and a HRO 50R-1 that like Hues has a dead pwr xfmr.
I got the front panel of a Coast Guard R-460  and it's S meter and PW dial.  It's a painted a nice gray. I'm hoping to find a cosmetically challenged HRO 50T or 50T1, that had the added IF stage, that I can maybe repurpose it into a R-460
I'm guessing the R-460 is probably a 50 R1 in uniform.

I agree that the HRO-7 is butt ugly but i think it would have been even uglier in black wrinkle. It's just ugly.
The HROs i prefer are light colored, like grey. Apparently from the Nat'l catalog grey was available in the
HRO, at least ones before the -5 ? I owned an AMR-101, which i kinda regret selling, and i liked very much
the grey finish. I have a ( German ) KST and i tell you, it looks much better than black, plus the knobs are
more stylish. ( Would you expect otherwise from a European product ? )  I have a Japanese HRO also, and
that one has a nice Japanese army light green. ( I understand mine might be a "Model 65", different from
the grey "Chi-Ichi" "Ground-Air Receiver No.1" .  ( I don't know why the Japanese "HRO" is so uncommon
here. I suppose they were not produced in any numbers, as the standard receiver for ship and ground
stations both was that huge beast, "Special Receiver 92". And if you Google it, the only pix you see is NOT
the receiver. )
At Puyallup i bought a National HFS just to get the power supply. I offered to buy the power supply alone
for his price, but he said i had to take it all. That PS i think i will match up with the HRO-5TA1 i have, which
i am going to sell. I bought separately off Ebay the HRO ham bandspread coils to go with it.
I have a nice looking HRO-50 in the Coast Guard R-460 nameplate now. It lacks the power transformer
( I think in common with all vintage Nationals ) and i have only the 7 - 14 Mcs. coil. Looks "real military"
but somehow i don't think i should go down that diversion path.
