I was a kid and bought stuff from Fair Radio starting in about
1960 or 1961. I remember our first order was about $80 and it
tipped the scales at 350 lbs all sent by Railway Express. We had
to go to the train station and pick it all up. The shipping
charges were under $4 for that entire pile of stuff. I forget what
was in that order, but it must have included a Bendix RA-10
receiver and a BC-603 tank receiver. We also got a Navy ship
intercom the size of a large microwave oven. It had a single 2A3
and rectifier with a big VU meter. I remember those well. I was
15 or 16 years old and just getting started in ham radio. I made
many orders to Fair Radio over the years. They were always great
to deal with. Surplus was the only way my brother and I could
afford parts and rigs in those days.
