I have worked on motor drive technologies for EVs.  The problem is the very high di/dt that is generated by the PWM.  High efficiency dictates very short transition times.  Yes, there are soft switching techniques (ZCS) that help and the use of very careful lead dress for field cancellation is a must.  The bottom line is that a vehicle can be made sufficiently RFI quiet but there is a cost in terms of components, weight, volume, and sheer upfront engineering time.  The easy way out is to note that the typical EV buyer is relatively young and doesn't care much about AM.

Jeez, doesn’t anybody use filters anymore?  My WW2 vintage vehicles has all kinds of grounding straps and filters to cut down/ eliminate RFI noise.  A more elaborate set of filters may be needed, but that is all. Or electric car manufacturers could be required to put the needed filters in.

Aren’t there FCC regulations that deal with RFI problems?  Electric cars would also cause  RFI problems for a lot of ham operators.

The problem is NOT that AM radios interfere
with the operation of EVs.  The problem is
that EV's are notorious for producing RFI,
especially in the MF(AM BC)  frequencies!

Your info is slightly out of date. Congress is moving to require AM radios in all vehicles ( https://www.axios.com/2023/05/17/am-radio-congress-cars ) which directly lead to Ford reversing course and keeping AM radio's in their vehicles ( https://www.theverge.com/2023/5/23/23734497/ford-am-radio-reverse-decision-ev-interference ).
