That would have likely been an APS-13 (tail end Charlie) , a simple pulsed
RADAR at 450 MHz, that lit a lamp and buzzer if its signals bounced off
anything.
There were three equipments that had similar appearance and operated in the
same band from late WWII- The APS-13 tail warning radar, the SCR-718
(BC-788) high range pulse altimeter with J-scan CRT display, and the APN-1
low range FM altimeter.

I don't remember now what I bought for about $5 that I think was some sort
of device used in the tail of a heavy bomber. No real use to me but I took
it apart for tube sockets (7-pin miniature) and whatever tubes they
contained. The initiation of my "junk box" in about 1954.
