I always use mine with a hospital grade isolation transformer and a VARIAC on occasion.

Well, this "nickname" Suicide Cord has been around for my 50 some years at this. Here is my version: Six foot AC 3 wire line cord, black wire has a fuseholder in-line, White and Black leads have aliigator clips with red boots on them (red for danger), green wire has black boot. New version has white, black and green boots on clips of corresponding wires for easy visual ID of which wire is where.
Easy to hook up AC power to something to test it, but dangerous if you are not careful! I usually plug it into a metered Variac so I have on-off control, etc.
Have a few of these around.
