[Milsurplus] Greenland air station "Bluie East Two" ruin

Years of stories from my father and many others growing up on an Air Force base about flying the “Chrome Dome” and TDY at Thule, now Pituffik Space Base make me feel somehow that I know that far away place. A good friend of mine who I worked with for years did much of the laser altimeter aerial mapping in a NASA P3 as part of Ice bridge, Wallops P3 spent a lot of time at Hanger 8 in Thule. Al was there for a long time and hated it, but while there he did have time to explore the old Nike sites and other local attractions. NASA was also contracted to help locate the old Cold War base Camp Century that was built under the ice that has started to relocate. Fun stuff.
The point if any is that we have been there a long time now and cannot imagine the US not being there, but then again saw a lot of base closures during BRAC so who knows.
They have a Technology Museum at Thule! Maybe the only museum in the world without a web page but I did see this Facebook page that has a lot of pictures:

Seems Greenland is much in the news these days. Interesting history, including some WW2 action against German weather station crews.

NY Times has an article where i grabbed this photo, January 8 2026 “Grab Greenland ?”

More photos from other sources online.

I recall some decades ago, i saw in some display in Seattle a hoodie – type outer garment that came from the Viking era Greenland. Fascinating.

This former airbase is also mentioned in WW2 memoirs of flyers. Was a going place, then.
