This subect reminded me. I was reading in 'Radio Bygones' this account by a Luftwaffe crewman whose
plane made an emergency landing in the Libya desert. He used the radio to reach back to Deutschland,
could not work a close station; convinced them that he was who he said he was. Another plane flew out
and delivered a replacement needed part. I am thinking now, landing just anywhere in the desert is not
necessarily a piece of cake, but i guess it can be done. During the investigation of the "Lady Be Good" the
USAF landed a good sized plane right in the desert nearby. The large photo book on that also has a photo
of a UK plane that got lost on a training flight and out of fuel had to land in the desert. Unfortunately
before a rescue plane could land nearby, the crew had already died, probably of thirst. Altho the night
time temps go down into the 30s, the daytime temps are brutal. In the photo the emergency landed plane
looks perfect; i think it was likely refueled and just flown out.
I remember when i was 10 years old and read the issue of LIFE magazine that had the article about finding
the 'Lady Be Good'. I recalled the article and some decades later bought the issue that had that article.
The large book on the subject, i should keep my mouth shut, but it seemed to me the author was something
immature and some photos were unnecessary.
