You probably have a TS-164 aircraft unit designed to be rack mounted next to the  BC-348 in the radio space of a B-29.  I’ve had several of these housings, and I prefer them, because I always add a 117V power supply.
Just slap some rubber feet on the bottom rails, and you have a very simple and accurate meter.  They are built to be dropped into a combat zone and are indestructible!  All frequency-determining components are either fixed (like the beeswax-coated coils) or machined from a big chunk of brass.
As long as you have the calibration book with the matching serial number (an absolute necessity, BTW), they will work indefinitely!

Hi Everyone

I have a BC-221N that is not in the typical metal case for portable use.

Rather, it's on a shock mount.

I've not encountered one like this before.

I know various bomber aircraft had a BC-221 (portable unit) stored on
board,  and I'm interested in learning when this type of mounted unit was
used instead.

I didn't see anything in TM11-300.
