You're probably thinking of August Link, whose business was at 2215 Faraday Ave. in Carlsbad, CA.  I did a bunch of work replicating parts for some of his pre-1930s gear.  Great guy.

He reached a point in his life where he wanted to take a different direction, and sold his entire collection over an extended period of time.
