Jeff, thanks for note. I have a G&G catalog here. I ordered some of the last things they sold. I bought a BC-1209 and an ATB; i already had the control box; the ATB was brand new, factory tag attached. The BC-1209 i
sold about 3 years ago to a war collector who knew zero about radio. I have mixed feeling about that now. It did cover 80m but, was a large heavy beast about 1.5 times the BC-654. Mine was one of 2 to ever surface. Someone told me the Mexican army bought them up after the USA chose not to use them after all, but there's no substantiation. Maybe. It is kinda strange that given a certain number produced only 2 show up here.
The ATB, i remember now i must have bought 2, because i traded one to the big collector in CA, name eludes me in this moment, but you know whom i'm talking about. The fellow based in Oceanside CA, who sold AM broadcast transmitter parts and liked to smoke a cigar. I met him once in Seattle; maybe he and friend came up for the big PSARA swapmeet. His friend offered me a big Japanese radio - like unit, but on closely studying the schematic inside on a lid, i determined it was the "base station" for a wired audio telegraph system. That and what seemed to be the "antenna connector" had no special quality insulation.
I recall at one point, this was 1973 - 1974, i ordered a BC-312 from G&G. Nothing happened, my check was not cashed, and i forgot about it. Many months later i got a letter ( a paper - medium message ) asking if i still wanted to go with the purchase, which i did not. I gather the owner was out ill during that time, altho i don't recall him telling me that himself. I must have spoken to him on the phone, tho, at some point, because i learned he had bought the 312s surplus from France and had them shipped over to USA. He said they were wired for dual diversity reception and so he did some rewiring to return them to standalone operation. Today i don't see how you could make any money on that deal.
It still kinda hurts that i sold the BC-1209. I think worse cuz the buyer was a newbie and seemed clueless. But i did it largely to keep my brother afloat, let him sell some of my stuff, cuz he's unable to make his own way. Anyway, i'll get over it ( i will have to ) and it's not like i lack for projects.
I wonder what became of that collection in Oceanside. I heard that the fellow really had a thing for "factory new" vintage equipment and had it behind glass display counters.
