My first QSO (long before I got a license) was with a Knight Kit "Span Master" regen receiver.
With the regen cranked up all the way and a key in the antenna lead, me and a kid a block away 
were able to run low speed CW. To receive, just back off of the regen control and turn up the
volume.

I'm not even sure we were inside of a ham band (I'm betting we weren't).

  of our members used an LM or 221 (don't remember which) as  CW transmitter
  by keying the antenna feed line." 
 
If you have an old HP608 sig gen, you can operate 2 meter FM by hooking an ant to it, set it on freq, and speaking loudly into the side of it.  Voice vibrations FM the carrier.
