I am dubious that any ATB was installled in any civilian aircraft ever.
The photo of the Quantas seaplane, i would guess actually showed an RCA transmitter similar to the ATB, but without the plugin
units. I sold such transmitter to a fellow milsurplus member, maybe a decade ago. The manual is actually pretty splendiforous,
with multicolor tuning charts.
The TBF fellow i spoke with years ago, who flew off the Gambier Bay until it was sunk, told me the HF gear was "only used for CW
practice". At that time it was ARB and, i assume, ATC / ART-13. He told me about listening, with the TBF parked on the Gambier
Bay, using the plane ARB to listen to Tokyo Rose. Unfortunately, now i have the time, and he has not, to ask more questions and
listen.
I also recall buying a TCS decades back by a fellow who told me about landing on the carrier and the radio op forgot to reel in
the trailing antenna. I guess there's not a checklist for every situation.
