I feel there is a place in amateur radio for all skill levels and interests, including those who are not technically skilled. But somehow it always catches me by surprise when I run into a ham who seems to have absolutely no technical interest at all, or even actively shows disdain for those who do. I guess I assume at least a little technical interest from those who are active in a technical hobby.
I recently had an email exchange with a ham who was having trouble with his main rig - I suggested replacing a troublesome rotary encoder. I provided the Mouser part number and link to order. I also sent photos of the inside of the rig showing disassembly and the location of the rear of the part.
Instead, he said he thought it would be a software problem and wanted to know how to reset the rig. I told him how that is done, but shared that the jittery action of the rotary control was not likely to be fixed by a reset.
Next he wanted my suggestions on where he could get the rig repaired and how to pack the rig for shipment. Being a large, heavy rig, I offered that it would be far less work and expense to replace the bad part himself than to pack and ship the rig off for repair. His response was to insult me for my foolishness, saying "No one with any sense works on electronics anymore."
If that is the case, I wonder who he would to be sending the rig to for repair.
