[Milsurplus] Solder Joints

I suppose clean desoldering is a greater skill than just soldering.
I have 3 boat radio boards with Collins mechanical filters soldered down, that i have put aside til i have a good desolder set, i think Hakko is the brand ?
I do NOT want to futz these using solder wick and so on.
On the other extreme, i have a kid's radio kit with the instruction book showing how to solder using a match; yes, a match. Now, doesn't that sound
like good fun for a youngster ? What could possibly go wrong ?
