Why is a 3/4 wave substantially different Z from a 1/4 wave ? No one ever mentioned that when we were shown the wavelengths : impedance chart.
Re the horizontal of the invert L antenna, yes it adds capacitance but that is not its job. It is to add length for 1/4 or 1l2 wave resonance. Most of the radiation will be from where the current is max.
I recall many years ago running 125 watts into TCS transmitter, 2x 1625 finals. Nowadays my attitude is more like, if i can't reach someone, reach for a bigger tool, or maybe a different medium, if i really must.
