I was just thinking of "Destination Gobi' which i first saw in early 1960s A.D. and then in recent years bought the DVD. Some writer obviously had experience with the U.S. Navy's China operations and wx observation stations. The film had a realistic station "call letters" or name also. Not too bad a movie considering some of the really low budget crap cranked out in those years. It did get progressively worse with the wx team's escape to western coastline China. If i remember right, they had to close up shop in the Gobi for lack of an 807. I don't mean a "cold 807". An old saying just came to mind: "The man with a spare / Hasn't a care."
I am wondering now what kind of plane simulated the Japanese bomber that wrecked their Gobi operation. I think in the movie, it was a PBY type ?
This topic brings to mind the Navy's SACO, Sino American Cooperation Organization. There used to be traces of it on the net, but probably most veterans with the inside story are gone now.
