Well, Shelby, like many hamfests, used to be massive. It has this kink
called the 'Land Rush' where you had to show up the previous Sunday to
claim your spot, and you could only buy 5 spots. You paid your money, and
went onto the field and pulled a flag out of the ground making it your
spot. Folks set up all week, and wheeling and dealing was done, a lot of
stuff bought only to be resold when the hamfest officially opened on
Friday, at a higher price of course. There were a lot of flags in the
ground on Friday according to many, but Saturday, it took off. People were
still coming in at 11-12 oclock with trailers of stuff. All of the folks I
know said they sold just about everything they brought, including a lot of
boatanchors. This was the first year that they did not include Sunday,
this was the first year I wish they had as I had to leave with the 2
fellows I caught a ride with around 11:30, and I would have gone back to
get a Halli and Poly-comm 6 meter transceiver a fellow had for $20 each. A
lot of stuff did not move, as the sellers think it is still a sellers
market on many things like 75A4's and Hammer 170's. One fellow had an amp
for sale at $200, same model as the one that I sold at Waynesville
hamfest for 50 and was happy to get it, one of those sweep tube 11-10-6
meter amps really aimed at the CB crowd. . I heard that this is the last
year of the Land Rush by a member of the club that runs the fest, he said
the complaints were louder this year and the subject would be taken up at
next week's club meeting. No reason to have such a thing if the fest is
only Friday and Saturday and no Sunday and having to make 2 trips.
