[Milsurplus] Surprise from Berryville hamfest

Most of us know now, WS19s and BC348s are a giveaway. But the -348 was my Dad's very first electronic project, bought while I was still in diapers I think. I still have it, and use it. Still plays, although I changed out all the .01 caps. It's got a lot of sentimental value FOR ME. For that reason it's very important to me.

I heard there was a pile of arc-5 stuff and wonder if anyone has a picture. I didnt walk around till it was gone.

Wish we knew you so you could meet up with other military collectors that were in attendance.

There was a vendor who had a large pile of derelict command set stuff.
I wish I got his name so that I could get a backstory on this radio.
Although the apparatus in not an explicit conversion military conversion, it is made of numerous military surplus parts.
If fact, it was the dial from an R-26 that made believe it was some sort of command set conversion.

I purchased it late in the day for a 5 dollar bill. No one was interested and I thought it was going to the dump.
I don't know what I was thinking. Maybe a good set of parts - who knows,
But when I got this thing home I realized what a gem I found.

The transmitter is a classic 3 tube crystal controlled MOPA with plug in coils ad a 807 in the final.
The receiver is a  6 tube superhet with plug in coils for the ant, osc and mixer.
There is a little modulator deck  I believe is for screen modulation.
The little bit of handwritten documentation leads me to believe the radio is a transceiver for 6 - 20m.

The layout and construction is superb. There are small engraved labels on all the controls and meters.
Even the homemade rack that all three decks mount to exudes craftmanship.
There is even a drake dial light to light up the entire front panel.
No major dings. No rust, just a light coating of dust everywhere..
This is a keeper and will be restored.
