[Milsurplus] Air VHF radio, WWII

The Army “Green Books” have something to say about the SCR-522… comments in
the fragility of the 832, which prompted the development of the 832A, and
the instability of the tuning “shifters”. The tuning on the -522 is so
skittish and sharp that the shock of landing would necessitate a trip by a
tech out to the plane to re-tune.

I have an ARC-4 as well as the ARC-5 VHF set (T-23 and R-28). Certain
crystal pairs from the BC-659 will work to put the TX’s and RX’s on the
same freq. on 2M.

My plan is to use a VHF pre-amp to improve S/N ratio… I have a couple of
Velleman’s to try first. ( I have had some success with my Gonset 2).

A side note… sounds off topic but stay with me: Frank Sinatra relied on a
guy named Jimmy Van Heusen to write some of his greatest hits (Come Fly
With Me, High Hopes, lots more that we’d all recognize). He palled around
with the Rat Pack, carousing all night long.
Few people knew that he led a double life… his day job was as a test pilot
for Lockheed. I have a photo of him (grin on his face) in the cockpit of a
P-38. Right behind his head is an SCR-522.
