A little more on Rod Newkirk, from my email archive:
>My condolences also to David Newkirk.
I noted this from the ARRL article:
"when World War II broke out, he joined the US Army as a member of the Army Signal Corps where he served in Florida, Papua-New Guinea and the Philippines.
He remembered these times in his first QST article, "Christmas, 1944," which recounted a "heart-warming yarn involving the combination of the Amateur and the Christmas Spirit in far-off Hollandia."
I recalled reading with interest this wartime account. Rod described listening to broadcasts over an Australian-built HRO-type
receiver. As I had just bought such a receiver, and am very interested in WW2 radio, I wrote to him, and told him how
interesting I found his reminisce. He was kind enough to write back and tell me a little more about the wartime experience.
Thanks for posting this. I likely would have missed it otherwise.
