So, the ground station wasn't radiating up...  Makes sense, for 
hand-held radio, with a vertical antenna.  Vertical over vertical rarely 
works, even close on a mast, and one vertical, one horizontal, if 
perfect, decouples by 30dB, or 1/1000th of the signal between them.

If you both turned your radios so the antennas were parallel to each 
other, both horizontal to the ground, for maximum coupling between them, 
communications would have been easy, and that thousand miles you hear 
about, could have been well into space.

Now, if you were jumping up and down on the ground, 20,000 feet to his 
left, that would have been silly, especially with a deployed 'chute, but 
you could have talked better over the radio.
