Good news for you, Wayne! The stickiness may come back to visit !
I had a, i think it wa, model G5 'Buzz Aldrin' multiband radio with the same problem. I thought about it and read about it, and decided that was enough 
for me. I gave the radio away; i did not want to deal with this again. And YES, it had been stored inside, room temperature, and i was the first
owner. It got the disease in about 5 years. 
I have 2 of Panasonic RF-5000, a large portable multiband radio. One has sticky and one does not. The sticky one was stored in semi - outside storage,
subject to large temperature and humidity fluctuations. This does not seem to be a necessary requirement tho. 
I have felt cords from WW2 era, both headphone and power cords, some sticky, some not. And radios and test equipment of less than 10 years old when
this first appears.
