Also, because of their effectiveness and secrecy, VTs initially were not permitted in ETO, lest any duds fall into "nasty" hands. [Deliberate misspelling.] War Dept permitted them only in PTO where they were fired over deep water. Battle of the Ardenne Forest (Bulge) later showed their effectiveness in anti-infantry use when set to fire 50 feet over heads of German forces.
