On several occasions, I saw something interesting at a garage sale, but the price would be crazy high, and the seller wouldn't budge. 

After the garage sale was done, I'd drive by a few evenings later and see that same interesting item at curbside with the rest of the trash. 

I never understood what (if anything) that type of selling was thinking. Isn't getting something for an item better than getting nothing?

I hesitate to get into some unpleasant tiff with the owner over my piddling offer. I suppose i should up my game, and simply say: 
"I am the ONLY person you will ever meet who would be interested in buying this. My offer is ridiculously low, but it's realistic and 
the ONLY offer you will get". 
I dunno, maybe even that is too offensive.
