The Conar chirp comments bring back so many memories. Back in that era two types of transmitters automatically ID'd operators, the whoop whoop of a Conar CQ and the Tone 3 report you would give just about every station from Cuba. I got an OO report for chirp on 15 meters with my Conar, I had one good crystal and one chirpy one for the Novice band back then that spanned 21.1 to 21.250 (some may say it did not go that high, but I just checked my old Handbook for Novice privileges in the time I was one) My 'good' crystal was high in the band where no one seemed to be, and my chirpy one down where stations congregated. My only other OO report a couple years later was for my Heathkit DX60 when I was running it as an exciter to a homebrew amp in RTTY, that was for key clicks, ironically also on 15 meters, 21.075. Guess the contacts in the machine, a Model 100, had some spikes riding on it.
