My experience with the restored RAL is similar.
As you say...there seems to be nothing between the signal and you.
So much more pleasing to hear cw on than my DSP filtered radios.
And yes....driving the Regen,gain ,vernier tune to get the "sound" your
ears like.
Paired up with the TDE transmitter , the TDE/RAL have racked up several EU
and many Asia/ Indonesia contacts on both 40 and 20 meters the last two
years.
Antennas nothing more than 160 ft longwire or 10ft diam. magnetic loop.
The basic function of generating a carrier and detecting that carrier in
its elemental form.The end to end transfer of messages accomplished just as
well as much more sophisticated modern devices.
