I think that WWII  airfield tower manual from Bremerton, WA, i sent Nick a while back shows tower receivers as RAS.
This kinda surprised me, and i thought, like you probably do, "Why didn't they use something better / more expensive ?"
Well, it worked.

Ray, no we ( at least I ) don't get tired of chewing the RAS topic. Hey, that's what this medium is for.
