I will guess the elimination of the antenna trimmer control was a cost saving measure.
I have always appreciated this control on any of my general coverage receivers that have it.
I'd say as your receiver is substantially already modified, why not go for it and install the 
small trimmer or compensator capacitor. I am sure for DXing you will appreciate every little
boost you can get.
