It will be difficult to pinpoint a year that non directional beacons
were established. They of course become very popular when the aircraft
"ADF" was established and the pilot could follow a bearing derived from
the "Needle". However much earlier there were antenna systems installed
on aircraft that were fixed and the aircraft would be turned in flight
left or right to obtain a bearing and then later loops that could be
rotated by hand could also be used.
