Every transport that I have flown always placed the radio near an exit.
Rationale was it was very heavy and hard to carry especially in a dark
fuselage that was upside down and taking on water. It was hard to manage
even in daylight and being deployed in Survival School. Most survival
equipment was placed near the exits.  We did store the rafts for a while
in the upper wing of the C-141 series but Lockheed  gave that up after
one of the rafts became active - got caught in the slip stream, left the
wing and then proceeded to wrap its self around the T tail causing
extreme aircraft control problems.

I do not know when they were removed from use, but I recall when I was stationed at Tinker AFB in 1974-1978 that a surplus store near the base had some for sale in a large soft sided container that was probably at least 2.5 ft square and looked to be designed to float. Tinker AFB would have been the logical place for such surplus equipment to be excessed, since it is the depot for B-52 and KC-135.
