[Milsurplus] Aluminum case on TCS ?

Many years ago, i owned a TCS receiver with the cabinet of aluminum, not steel.
What was the reason for that? My early guess of minesweeper use is clearly nonsensical.
Was it just that they started that way, and then decided there were better uses for aluminum?
