Lantern batteries should have 'F'' cells in them. I have used these in
things like battle lanterns to simulate those old large 'A' batteries.
I have a battery operated beacon monitor receiver that took an 'F' cell
for the filament
What make/model receiver uses those?
I don't' recall seeing F cells on the shelf, but I used to pull them
from lantern batteries when I was very young.
I haven't seen bell batteries on the shelves since the 70's, and from
what I understand, the very few still on the market have large plastic
cases with a singe D cell inside, and are now called "ignition
batteries", no longer used to ring a local bell, but start model engines.
AAAA batteries were hard to come by, and expensive 50 years ago, so I'd
pull them from relatively expensive 9 volt batteries. Cheapo 9V
batteries had carbon piles in them.
The worst was 1/4 AA, I think that's the size, in a mercury cell. I
have a pocket radio that uses two, and 40-50 years ago, they were about
$7 each. Dad had a fit. That's more than $38 per battery nowadays! He
promptly glued a AAA battery holder to the radio, and we got some free
battery club cards from Radio Shack. There was also an F size, but in
12V with large snap-on connectors on the ends, I recall those in smoke
alarms in the 70's, another freakishly expensive battery.
