The aluminum battery holders worked fine but there was always the problem with the two lugs protruding to catch on things or scratch other items when mounted externally.

A more modern approach is the plastic boxes that have a cover and come with or without a switch. Can be mounted without holes by glue or double-sided tape. Pretty inexpensive when purchased in small quantities. Good >appearance and doesn't look like a kludge.

I disagree with the adjective "more modern" and would maybe say, "more elegant" instead. 
I looked at those when i shopped. I actually have a sample i took off something i scrapped, so i'm familiar with the idea.
BUT....I wanted something where the battery is absolutely visible at all times. The visibility at all times will also remind me to be aware of the battery's age.
I have this theory that batteries only do this when they are hiding inside something. So i decided i would fox that. I don't anticipate any problem with one unit goring another. 
Hmmm....now i'm thinking if i left the top off the plastics battery box, that might be the best of both ideas. I'll have to reconsider and shop again for a model to try out.
