Hue, I've been doing this slowly as various batteries expire. In my HP E4433B RF generator, I replaced the soldered and glued-in memory backup battery with an external pack. Pix below.

Subject: [Milsurplus] Batteries....

Addendum to battery discussion: i have owned enough equipment that I have found unpleasant surprises in, that i am thinking of countermeasures.
Some equipments are just inconvenient to check and replace batteries, for example the Millen dipmeter, solid state version. Why should i have to disassemble, open the cabinet just to replace a battery? I just ordered two styles of "9 volt battery holder", a metal clip thing. I am thinking like mounting the holder and a battery clip on the back of, for example, the Vectronics regenerative receiver and maybe even on a side of some VOMs or DVOMs or LCR meter which are not going to see rugged or outdoor service. That way the battery will always be visible and simple to remove.
I bought 2 styles of metal holder so i can judge which is better.
