[Milsurplus] What is this flex cable for ?

I have a Harvey-Wells AR-10 aircraft receiver with manual which was developed in 1943.  The manual calls the flex cable a "tuning control tachometer shaft" that is similar to the S.S. White L-150.
Sure enough, S.S. White is still in business.  They patented the flex cable back in 1875 and still make them!
