For all the folks that had the answer for the mystery Big Bang Theory device, a big thank you. Now, I know. We had those huge, gray, HP counters that used neon lamps to light up a number through a translucent window when I first started with the Navy. A couple had a slot for plugins for that would let you read up to 100MC or so. Prior to that, we were using the HP 510 or 608 to determine freqs using the heterodyne method and log scale with the headphones plugged in the front of the sig gen. But one of the main uses of those early counters was to put it in test, flip the gate switch on and off, and translating the numbers to cards, figure out the loser that had to buy the Cokes.
