Not directly dealing with the B+ question, but...
The 'Orange conversion book' ca. I think 1948, has some changes like tube biasing and crystal filter switch mod that I think are very worthwhile.
These do not affect appearance at all, add no holes or knobs.

Now a kind of sad story. I had a nice BC-312 many years ago. I did all the above resistor changes, added zener regulation to the HFO, modified
the crystal filter switch as recommended. Then I decided to change the antenna trimmer to parallel instead of the series connection as found.
Except that with it paralleled, the RF stage would no longer resonate at working frequency. Well, I set it aside to straighten out later. In
retrospect, would not have taken major reengineering. But I set it aside....decades went by....and I decided to sell it at hamfair. I totally forgot
what I had done inside. The potential buyer wanted to open it up to look. He saw the loose wires in the antenna area and so did I. I was totally
abashed and marked down the price instantly to a giveaway. Later I regretted it, regretted not finishing up the otherwise great job I had done
on this perfect looking BC-312. Oh well....i think I have enough projects still uncompleted, in the que, to last a team of technicians their lifetimes.
I am gradually making the hard decisions and whittling down the input pile, really I am.
