Operation Able Archer '83 Special event station W3A will be on the air again from Fort Miles located at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware this weekend.
We are planning on being on the air at 9:00 AM Saturday morning until 5:00 PM Sunday from building 607 just down from Battery 519 and the Fort Miles Military Park.
Building 607 and most of Fort Miles served as a US Navy SOSUS site during the Cold War and we always try to get Able Archer to operate from a "Cold War" relevant site. Before operating from Cape Henlopen we operated at the W-25 a Nike Missile site in Davidsonville Maryland and are always on the lookout for future sites.
We will have Cold War relevant equipment for operations from eighty to two meters supporting all modes including voice and teletype. A quick list of radios includes a Harris RF-350K, KWM-2A, AN/GRC-106, VRC-46 and URC-110 for VHF with the GRC-106 and VRC-46 being operated from my M151 MUTT We will also have other items including field radios, phones and assorted Cold War equipment on site.
Operation will be Holiday Style using the W3A call, this is not a points or number of contacts driven event but we will make a special effort to get the W3A call on the RTTY 7087 Net, the MMRCG 7296 USB and the 5357 Moose & Squirrel Net Saturday morning.
This is where you come in, the State Park people are great in giving us an entire building to use for this and we have plenty of space for anyone else who would like to come out and take part. You can use our radios, bring your own, operate as little or as long as you like and have the run of the complex. The park has a museum up at battery 519 where you can see the fourteen-inch gun, or the sixteen-inch gun from the Missouri or their new exhibit with a chunk of the Arizona.
We can always use more participation and this is an opportunity to operate from any of the beaches, barracks or observation tower at the park. If you want to stay overnight just remember to bring your own cot or sleeping bag.
