One of the more interesting and instructional 
economic lessons I have learned was about one 
airline that did a economic study regarding 
aircraft routes that sometimes had very little 
passenger traffic. The airline in question (I 
forget which one is was) found out that it was 
cheaper for them to fly the route (I.E. they lost 
less money) with NO passengers than to ground/not 
fly the aircraft and pay the costs associated 
with that. Manytimes it's cheaper for you in the 
long run to get rid of something for a cheaper 
price than let it set around for a long time and never sell it. YMMV.
