That's a good point, Michael.  The C-116/ARR-2A was also provided, at 
first primarily for fighters where the room for surface mount boxes was 
minimal.  At 6" wide, the rack box style was 1/4" wider than the later 
(and still current 5.75" width) style of MIL-C-6781 which had the black 
etched Lucite panels that were back lit, and Dzus 1/4 turn fasteners to 
make quick removal a joy.  More on the earlier interim rack control box
