[Milsurplus] Hamvention Attendance

I don’t know what Ham radio is anymore, although I am responsible for getting several people to get their licenses and get active it often appears that many of the current generation have a greater desire to work the keyboard instead of a soldering iron, and why not? That’s where the action is today in digital modes, couple years back it was VOIP crosslinks and stuff like that. One of the most useful tools today is the software defined radio or SDR receivers that are out there and they change forever the way you operate radio once you start using one. Now you can see things like not only your signal and what it looks like but the entire band and what’s going on.
I am not making a value statement here. Not saying what the current generation is doing is right or wrong but just that as the main group of Hams in our communities move forward I find myself ever increasingly in a technological backwater.
Perhaps that’s why I have let my membership to the ARRL drop a couple years back because although I have seen them make inroads into supporting Vintage radio and operators still don’t feel obliged to jump on the bus with the rest of the Hams and there Bofangs , tee shirts and hats with there call all over them and the like.
Friend of mine wanted to buy me a hat with my call on it for Dayton and I down right refused, told him I would rather wearer a tee shirt with “Big Ben” “The big voice on channel 19” then the Ham radio stuff.
But that’s just me. Best thing about being active today. With the internet we can assemble groups of like minded and not have to be beholden to the larger mass, like traditional Ham radio and the constant drum beat of QST, buy, buy, buy.
But that’s just me, your results, onionin’s and experiences may be different.

This is a very small sampling population in this small city, but the local hams are interested in 'operating' and trying out the newer modes....hacking older electronics, or even knowing what electronics was, more than one generation back...what's that ?
